The latest jeans?  All the other trends that need to be copied, captured, and re-created to make those little smiles?  Those tags can add up. Before we even trudge over to the pencil and paper aisle, it seems like every year there’s already an August spending spree that can make most of us blanch.

Hoffbrau Steaks is TAX FREE TOO!

Believe it or not, our great state of Texas is one of only 18, nationwide, to offer a tax-free weekend to help out tired, perhaps overwrought parents.

First, We’ll Get Down to the Nitty Gritty:  On what (exactly) do you save?

Items Covered by Tax Exemption:

Clothing: Belts, jerseys, raincoats, sleepwear and undergarments all make the cut, as do most regular clothing items.

Shoes: Thumbs up for things such as cowboy boots, sandals, slippers, hiking boots and socks. Thumbs down for footwear such as ice skates, cleats, and roller blades.

School supplies valued at less than $100 including lunch boxes, calculators, tape and backpacks are all okay. All qualifying backpacks must be purchased for a school-aged child and can not have wheels.

These discounts even include layaway items.

For most of you, Sunday’s paper is all you’ll need to match ad’s.  Many retailer’s will even match other advertised prices, so bring those ads along on your big outing.  However, for the more tech savvy, try these free apps.  They’ll help you ALL weekend long.  Saving you more fried pickle and double chocolate brownie time.

RedLaser – Barcode Scanner, Shopping Assistant and QR Code Reader This app does it all. Scan UPC codes and QR codes to learn more about a product; search hundreds of retailers (local and online) to compare prices or find the item in your area; browse deals and retailers’ coupons; scan and store your loyalty cards; and even buy directly from select retailers.

Milo: Local Shopping With Milo the focus is on finding the best local price on whatever it is you need. It scans real-time availability for you, as well! 1.Scan barcodes, 2.View product descriptions and read reviews. 3.Map is a handy feature, which shows you all nearby stores that carry a certain product. 4.You can view how different stores’ prices compare to one another and, in some cases, even pay for the item on your phone via PayPal, and then go pick it up.

Google Shopper (iOS/Android)  Google Shopper is a mobile portal to all of Google’s shopping options, including Google’s local offers, daily deals, and more importantly, product search and comparison shopping via Google Shopping. Simple scan the barcode of a product, speak its name aloud, or even scan the covers of books, magazines, and other media to search Google’s database for the product. If the same product is available at one of Google’s partner retailers, you’ll see how much it costs. The best part of Google Shopper is that it combines prices from local retailers with online prices to make sure you get the best deal.

ShopSavvy (iOS/Android/WP7)  Before Google and Amazon got really deep into the mobile price comparison game, ShopSavvy was making lists of must-install apps for any mobile OS. ShopSavvy is still a great tool, and allows you to scan the barcode of a product to search for it online, see prices at other brick-and-mortar and online retailers, and even load up your ShopSavvy “wallet” with cash so you can quickly purchase directly through the app. ShopSavvy even includes estimated shipping prices from the retailers listed so you can deal in final prices, not base prices. Finally, the ShopSavvy app gives you a window to a large community of people using the app, rating products and retailers, and letting you know whether the item you’re thinking about buying is any good before you buy.
