Family Friendly Haltom City

Tarrant Counties first city, Haltom City was once called Birdville, and is still serviced by the award-winning Birdville ISD, one of the DFW’s premier school districts. Directly located at the junction of I-35N, and 820, it’s a optimal spot for travelers to stop for a friendly bite, and see a bit of something new…and old. Through the Amon Carter exhibit at the Haltom City public library, you can stop for free to to see 46 landmark photographs taken at the turn of the century by the Swartz Brothers Photography Studios, right here in Tarrant County. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a famous bowler hat photo of the “Wild Bunch,” the real life gang of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Texas Motor Speedway

Just 15 miles north is the home of 2 Nascar Sprint Cup races, as well as 2 Nationwide series races, and several Indy car series. Built in 1996, the Texas Motor Speedway is a track like no other, boasting some of the fastest speeds on the circuit. Reaching speeds on corners of over 200 mph, the track has been a fan favorite for years. Night races are a particular thrill, and if your driver wins, ours is the only track where he…or she will win a set of revolvers at the event. My tip? Nothing is as good as a night race, a shoot out, and call ahead seating for the world’s greatest steak!

Need to cool off? One of our area’s best family destinations is just a couple minutes drive to North Richland Hill’s water park, NRH2O. With swimming movie watching parties, the area’s newest water attractions, and a great central destination, NRH2O is perfect for visitors from all spots in the metroplex. Our favorite hint? Bring a full or empty Dr. Pepper with you when you come for $5 off admission! You know we LOVE Pepper fans!

Almost part of Ft.Worth

The Stockyards, full of amazing live music, rodeo attractions, and all things western are closer to Haltom City than to most parts of downtown. Weekends in the Stockyards will often find actors dressed in full period costume, and the twice daily herd drives are not to be missed. Tour Billy Bob’s, take a free line dance class, and check out all the “hands” that have played here since 1981. A few more fun facts of this former open air barn…

• The record for most bottled beers sold in one night is 16,000 bottles at the Hank Williams Jr. concert in 1986. The second highest record is 14,700 bottles during the Robert Earl Keen Concert in 2001.

• Merle Haggard made the Guinness Book of World Records for buying the largest round of drinks when he bought 5,095 drinks of Canadian Club for the entire club. The bill totaled $12,737.50 and equaled 40 gallons of whiskey.
